‘PM Narendra Modi’s free ration scheme to help over 2 crore in Assam’ | Guwahati News

GUWAHATI: Appreciating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to extend the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) till the end of November, Assam BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass said the move will benefit over 2 crore people in the state.
“Assam BJP appreciates the PM’s decision to extend the policy of providing free ration till November end. 58 lakh families, which is around 2 crore 5 lakh individuals, in Assam will reap the benefits of the extension. While each individual gets 5 kg of rice, each family gets 1kg of pulses per month,” Dass said on Wednesday.
He informed that 1.25 lakh tonnes of rice and 5,795 tonnes of gram will have to be distributed by the government every month in Assam till the scheme persists. “After the announcement by the Prime Minister, Assam will get an additional Rs 2,236 crore from the Centre. We offer our gratitude to PM Modi to help out the farmers’ fraternity and taxpayers at this hour of crisis. The coordinated effort of all quarters has made it possible to fight the pandemic,” he added.
Speaking on the lockdown declared by the Assam government in Guwahati, he said residents of the city should come forward voluntarily for swab testing as the Covid situation is alarming in the state capital. Dass added that he himself, along with his family members, have already gone for the test. “Since four of my escorts (police personnel) had tested positive for the novel coronavirus, we got ourselves tested,” he said.
The state BJP chief also hit out at the Congress which had criticized the state government for imposing the lockdown “unilaterally”. “We all have to rise above politics in order to fight this pandemic. Political parties need to help our government at this hour. BJP has not criticised the Maharashtra government, of which Congress is a part, for extending the lockdown till July 31,” Dass said.
